Mark’s presentation was helpful in providing examples not only for EMDR but a reminder on how to be a genuine and caring therapist. I appreciated the suggestions for interweaves to help clients move in a healthy direction as they processed their spiritual trauma.

I found Mark’s course on Spiritual Trauma and EMDR to be extremely fascinating. It challenged me to look more in-depth about my clients and how their spiritual trauma has shaped them and their negative, as well as positive beliefs.

As a Christian therapist, I have seen that spiritual and religious trauma is what often brings clients to my office. Mark’s course on Spiritual Trauma and EMDR Therapy is very well formulated and addresses many helpful EMDR techniques pinpointed to the various dilemmas such as mind-bending paradoxes, crisis of faith, legalism, traumatic memories and doubts that God loves them. I wholeheartedly recommend Mark’s course, he appears to be one of the leading Christian EMDR Therapists to follow. I can imagine he would be an excellent consultant as well.

Mark did an excellent job in addressing spiritual trauma and how EMDR therapy can help a client to reduce the emotional imprint of such trauma on his life which will assist the client with living a much better life. Mark seems very aware of how devastating a spiritual trauma can be to a person and he seems to really care about others.
Rose Lynch, LCPC, CADC

Everyone should take this course. You do not need to be religious to gain from Mark’s wisdom. I believe the concepts he presents offer hope and healing for anyone hurting from a broad spectrum of trauma. Excellent presentation!
May Jo Lagoski, MA, LPC (Lubbock, TX)

Mark does a masterful job of addressing the aspects of spirituality that we need to be aware of as we pursue healing of our clients through EMDR, especially some nuances I hadn’t thought of previously. Thank you!

I enjoyed the pace, content and tone of this course. Mark came across as authentic and caring and passionate about his work, and those elements enabled me to feel emotionally safe in following his offer to reflect on the points being made. It was refreshing to not have a power point, but instead the drawings and enactments to illustrate points, as well as him simply talking in a heartfelt way to his audience.

Mark does an excellent job of connecting how both genetics and life experiences connect with our world view. When dealing with clients who have spiritual wounds, he does a great job of explaining ways to be mindful to affirm the wound without attacking the source(s) of the wound because there could be complicated intertwined positive and negative life experiences the client will need to explore with the therapist’s help.

Mark presents helpful information and understanding while integrating EMDR, for the therapist to implement while working with clients who have experienced spiritual abuse or what I call “theological bullying.”

Mark Odland’s Spiritual Trauma Training for EMDR Therapists has a well structured format, and is presented with a balance of theory and compassion.

This training expanded my concept of “spiritual trauma” significantly and helped broaden my appreciation for how trauma in general can deeply affect one’s relationship with God. Mark’s examples of specific interweaves to use with deeply religious clients were extremely helpful — as were his non-judgmental explanations of how some clients view concepts such as sin, forgiveness and grace. This is an excellent and relevant course.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course! Mark’s demeanor is peaceful and present and he embodies the feeling of safety in therapy. I especially enjoyed the concepts of neutrality and theological curiosity. I loved the presentation with the simple drawings and the soothing music during reflection. Reminds me of the show “Simon” from childhood.

Recently I came across Mark’s course “Spiritual Trauma and EMDR Therapy” while searching for more ways to incorporate faith principles into my sessions. As an ordained minister and licensed therapist I have often found it has been up to me to “put together” the principles of both disciplines into my practice. It was refreshing to gain tools for incorporation and areas for reflection while working with clients of faith. This course forced me to reflect on the client/therapist relationship many times over, and fostered a deeper examining of my own faith principles. If I were to sum up what I leave with most from this course, it would be renewed awareness for both the client and myself. For this I am extremely grateful.

I enjoyed this course. I have never seen an EMDR course that had a spiritual aspect. I felt the course had some useful tips for incorporating into the EMDR process, plus some great “in general” reminders for practitioners who work with spiritually-minded and spiritually traumatized clients.

Having the tools and confidence as a clinician to assess and treat clients who experience the hurt and shame resulting from spiritual trauma is crucial in an integrated approach towards health and wellness. Thank you Mark for providing a course that equips clinicians with these tools.

I was not sure entirely what to expect in Mark’s course on spiritual trauma. What I discovered was a highly practical, nuanced, and wise guidance through the application of EMDR through many of the sometimes complex and challenging issues that religious clients may face. Worth every dollar, maybe more. I’m pleased to have chanced upon this course and what is clearly the seasoned wisdom of many years of experience in Mark Odland.

Mark’s course was thorough and very helpful in clarifying professional boundaries and interface with spiritual needs of clients. It was practical and should be considered an ethics course, as well.

Mark made a challenging topic so very clear and understandable. His presence and presentation embodied the principles he was teaching. I realized my own biases and woundedness particularly in the Paradox presentation. I am very thankful that I participated in this webinar!

I like Mark’s examples of cognitive interweaves and explaining how he works with EMDR. I like the way he draws while giving the course. It keeps my attention better. I believe I learned a lot in this course especially about paradox, two seemingly opposite beliefs. I would recommend the course to my colleagues. Also, it was very soothing. Thank you!

I enjoyed this class very much. Mark’s combination of teaching style, i.e. his pacing, and reflections, his stories and the drawings made it an engaging class. And I learned some different things I hadn’t considered. All and all a very good class.

This training provides EMDR professionals with knowledge on how to deal with spiritual concerns in EMDR counseling. The training is designed for all EMDR professionals and not just for faith-based EMDR professionals. This course is helpful if you deal with clients that have spirituality in his or her life, which many do.

Mark’s training exceeded my expectations. I took it initially to obtain the CEUs, but also because of the opportunity to learn about the intersection between EMDR & spirituality. I’m also an AF-EMDR credentialed therapist & find that this modality allows for & embraces spirituality, so was interested to see how the basic protocol would do this as well. Mark was extremely knowledgeable, engaging & exuded a warmth & sincerity that I have not seen in many presenters, & one that resonated with me as I have experienced spiritual trauma since childhood myself. Not only did I learn more about ways to continue to work on my own spirituality, but Mark’s presentation also made me want to re-evaluate my own (spiritual) biases. I am excited to use what I learned in my own work. Would highly recommend to anyone who has an interest in combining spirituality & EMDR, and also of just finding genuine ways to deepen the therapeutic process with our clients. Maika’i! (in Hawaiian that means “awesome!”).

This EMDR training is a must if you plan to utilize EMDR therapy with Christian clients from evangelical backgrounds. The case examples and the expertise shared provide practical tools for therapists of any background to be comfortable with providing therapy through this cultural lens of faith.

An outstanding training. Mark was well prepared, adept at presenting the material, integrating faith with the process of EMDR and providing deeper understanding of both.
Patti Ecker, MAC, LCPC (Normal, IL)

I appreciated how this training not only was direct in beliefs in spirituality that may occur or create challenges for clients, but also how these concepts can be translated to those who are atheist or agnostic. Negative self talk, shame, and dichotomous thoughts impact those that are devout or without religion.

This course, “Spiritual Trauma & EMDR Therapy: 7 Steps to Help Clients Heal” by Mark Odland was just what I needed to not only help clients but to also explore my own spirituality, religious background, and increase my effectiveness as an EMDR therapist. I will no longer neglect to consider the spiritual/religious history of clients! Thank you, Mark!

Thank you for an insightful and absorbing training experience. I have been an EMDR therapist since 1998, completed a zillion Intake Assessments, genograms, etc., and your course presented inspiring ways to have a deeper exploration of spiritual matters. On a personal note, your questions and reflection times at the end of each chapter challenged me and brought up some spiritual dilemmas which I had “conveniently” avoided for some time- and the music was wonderful! In summary, I found your course to be incredibly helpful. Thanks again!

…It was well presented, well organized, and made good use of the integration of spirituality and EMDR. The teaching on paradox and EMDR was one of my takeaways. The examples and personal experiences were related in an excellent way in that they illustrated key points of the course. The anecdotes shared during the discussion of relationship and empathy were powerful and moving. Thank you Mark for sharing your well of knowledge and wisdom. This course motivated me and equipped me with powerful tools.

I’m so happy Spirit led me to Mark Odland! As someone who is an EMDR provider this material, and Mark’s sensitive, empathic and neutral cognitive interweaves are inspiring & tremendously helpful in meeting my clients where they are at on their spiritual paths. Thank you Mark.

Thank you! I really enjoyed this training. Everything I do is from an EMDR lens but I can also use much of this information to work with supervising non-EMDR trained therapists (who are not using EMDR). It is so adaptable. Thank you for sharing your passion with the rest of us.

Mark has dared to go where many do not! He is lighting a pathway to healing that so many need…Therapists will certainly benefit from addressing the “elephant in the room”…the topic of God and spirituality. For most, such a belief system is their existential purpose. What happens when it is shaken? Mark addresses this gracefully and provides sound clinical recommendations to forward one’s healing process. He is a blessing! Very Respectfully,
Dr. Tajiri, PsyD, ABPP

I found this course to be really helpful in understanding how to better help clients who may have had negative experiences with organized religion or who may be experiencing conflict between religious beliefs and spiritual ones that are important to their healing.

As therapists, we know a client’s spiritual beliefs can immensely impact their lives and well being. But there’s often a gap between knowing this and what we do in practice. There’s just not a lot of training about how to turn the theory into practice. We’re often left on our own to figure out how to integrate healing from spiritual traumas into our client work. Mark fills this gap and leaves you with actionable tools that you can immediately implement. Building upon already established EMDR protocols, he tailors the training to help you actually be able turn theory into practice. By the time you’ve completed the training, the theory, stories, and detailed examples he’s shared make you feel like you’ve got a solid handle on what you’re going to do, why you’re going to do it, and how you’re going to do it. The fact that his examples were about Christian clients who had experienced trauma at the hands of other Christians was incredibly helpful. It made the training specific enough to feel relevant and not watered down. At the same time, the tools are transferable to any person with any belief system. I completed the training with do-able EMDR methods to implement with my clients of faith, and with a renewed sense of purpose as a therapist. So. Well. Done. Thanks Mark!

This program was thought provoking for me as I do not practice as a spiritual counselor. It gave me more insight on how to open up the aspect of spirituality in sessions as appropriate.

I truly appreciate Mark’s course as it is in line with my work as a spiritual counselor. Great pace, clear concepts, touching clients’ examples, entertaining graphics, and words of wisdom. The reflections questions at the end of each video are important moments that allow taking greater responsibility for how our own spiritual beliefs and views may be impacting our clients. Many Ah! Ah! moments. I encourage everyone to take this course even if you are not specializing in spiritual counseling.

This course was important for me as a therapist – it validated the process of integrating spirituality into therapy in a systems based structure. The use of EMDR was validated and specific tools highlighted within a 7 step process that was highly consistent with how I work after more than 35 years of treatment experience. The focus on exploring the client’s spirituality within a framework of neutrality, tolerance, and positive regard is consistent with the highest standards of our profession. Recognition of how our own experience with religion and spirituality can interact with the client’s lived experience was validated. Mark proposes a process approach whereby we as therapists validate the client’s anger, pain, and shame without placing them in the bind of having to (or failing to provide) forgiveness in a time sensitive process. I highly recommend this course to therapists of whatever religious stripe. It encourages our own growth and challenges us to find our biases.
Mike Buckley, PhD psych, MA coun, RCT – Nova Scotia

Mark’s course is a timely and valuable contribution to the EMDR literature. His cognitive interweaves for resourcing clients’ spiritual beliefs beautifully demonstrate how the EMDR protocol brings to our clients an opportunity for powerful healing experiences at the point where science and spirit meet. Thank you, Mark!
